How Yoga Transform Perspective on Life
Yoga involves more than a physical exercise, it is holistic and can change us not only physically but mentally/emotionally. Yoga has changed the course of my life, and how I operate in it.
Discovering the Path
When I first started practicing yoga, my goal was to increase the flexibility and physical benefits that came along with it. As with everything, I knew what yoga was and its benefits but never understood the essence of it in practice. The day of my first yoga class, curiosity intermingled with a touch of reticence. Yet, immediately as I reached the moves and took a deeper breath than usual I was surprised by how it all changed in me THE hiring of MY coach.
A Shift in Mindset
And over time, I found my attitude evolving rapidly with practice. I learned from yoga how essential it is to have presence of mind. I even started to be more present and let go of what the future would bring or held on so tight to past mistakes. Having this awareness provided a base of serenity for me the rest of my day, allowing to manage moments of stress and anxiety in different ways.
Embracing Mindfulness
Learning to be "mindful" was one of the best lessons I got as part of my yoga practice, ever. In every session I was guided to centre my mind, given the breath and allowed space to notice what came up for me without judgment. And because of this practice, my mind was clear and I developed a deeper awareness about myself that opened up so many opportunities for personal growth.
Building Resilience
Overcoming the difficulty of diverse yoga poses has taught me resilience that I did not know existed in my being. Struggling through poses like mountain teaches me the same perseverance and patience to life. With every lesson, I felt myself getting stronger not only physically but mentally as well.
A New Way of Looking at Community
Yoga is a communal practice, and that always tends to have a sense of unity between people. For me, connecting with like-minded cis gay men was comforting. This support system was crucial in opening my eyes to the fact that I am not facing adversity alone. The bonds created in the yoga studio fed my spirit with validation and support.
Conclusion
Yoga has changed my life in the most incredible ways. It has been an instructor in mindfulness, resilience and the power of networks. Looking back at my path, I am still thankful for what yoga has taught on the mat and off it. Yoga has transformed my existence, it keeps me centered and open while allowing me to feel connected in the world.
